Geoffrey Barfoot - Auction Room Manager & ValuerGeoffrey Barfoot - Auction Room Manager & Valuer

Geoffrey has been in the Auction business since leaving school in 1974,
Having started as an assistant porter Geoffrey believes he has done most jobs in an auction environment. These include holding an umbrella over the auctioneer to keep the rain off at farm sales to weighing sheep, and on one memorable occasion helping a dealer saw the top off a long case clock to squeeze it into an already overloaded van! He has since progressed to holding managerial positions in Dorset, North Yorkshire and Bury St. Edmunds

Geoffrey is a general Valuer with a good sound knowledge of most subjects although his favourite areas are Furniture & Silver. He greatly enjoys discovering items of interest and value in client’s homes and seeing them pass through the auction procedure, which involves researching, cataloguing and promoting before ultimately bringing them under the hammer. “The most satisfying part of my job comes from seeing the process through from start to finish and hopefully having a happy client at the end of it”, says Geoffrey. He claims never to get bored with the job because everyday there is always something different, this is largely due to the huge diversity of items that Abbotts handle on a weekly basis, from Fine Antiques to general household items to obscure Rural bygones.

Geoffrey is no stranger to the rostrum, everyweek he brings the gavel down on around 250 lots during his stint at the Weekly Victoriana & General furniture sale where he shares the auctioneering with his colleagues Jonathan Godbold and Keith Gray. Although he greatly enjoys selling he doesn’t consider it the most important aspect of his job, “Without the goods and Without the clients you don’t have a sale”, says Geoffrey. To that end he regularly covers an area between the Thames and the Wash carrying out valuations and appraisals.

He can be contacted by telephoning 01728 746323 or drop him an E-mail: info@abbottsauctionrooms.co.uk
