General Advice

General Advice

Why sell at Auction?
In a rising and increasingly competitive market, sale by auction is likely to be the best way of realizing the optimum market price for your goods. There are few other venues that attract such a diversity of buyers and sell such a range of objects that pass through the hands of an auctioneer in the course of a year.

Would I obtain a better price in London?
With the exception of very rare and esoteric items for which there are only a few collectors, the answer is no! Often the hammer price is compatible to London auction houses, but the cost of selling can make the return less. Indeed, there are many examples of much higher prices in the provincial auctions houses, with modern technology auctions are advertised countrywide and reach International buyers by the internet etc

I want to put things into one of your auctions, How do I go about it?
If you wish to consign goods to our Weekly auction just give us a ring and we will make a booking for you (please refer to Weekly auctions/selling goods). Goods for our antiques & Fine Art auctions can be brought to the salesrooms Tues-Fri. 9-5pm where a Valuer is usually available to give you guidance.

Can I put a reserve price on my goods?
Yes, the Valuer will give advice on the current market value and suggest a suitable figure. Items which appear within our Fine Art catalogues carry estimates which normally reflect reserves, if there are any.

What does it cost to sell at auction?
Abbotts, as most auction houses work on a commission basis, please refer to our Weekly auctions/Selling Goods for our charges.

Are there any extra charges?
The auctioneer may decide to photograph an item in the Antique auction and an extra charge would apply, see our terms and conditions.

Are my goods safe whilst waiting to be auctioned?
Yes – Goods consigned to the auction rooms are covered by our insurance immediately they are on the premises. We make no extra charge for this service.

Can you collect?
Although Abbotts do not have their own vehicles, we can arrange collection through local carriers which we have used on a regular basis for a number of years and are confident about their reliability. The cost of this service would be deducted from the final proceeds.
